Are Acorns Safe for Dogs?
No, acorns can cause stomach upset, kidney disease, and intestinal blockage.
You may have noticed that acorns are in abundance this year. An oak tree twenty years old or older produce acorns and one tree can produce thousands of acorns.
Acorns contain gallic acid and tanic acid which can cause stomach upset, vomiting, diarrhea and general discomfort. There is also the risk of kidney disease. Gastrointestinal obstruction can occur because the size and shape of an acorn can become a potentially life-threatening foreign body if swallowed.
It’s always best to be cautious about acorns. If your dog becomes ill after eating acorns, call your veterinarian immediately. A physical exam, bloodwork, and x-rays may be needed, as well as, fluids and medications.
