I graduated from Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine in 1986. My wife and I, Dr. Soverns, co-founded Countryside Veterinary Clinic in 1988. Countryside Veterinary Clinic quickly grew to become one of the largest practices in Howard County. My main areas of interest in veterinary medicine include orthopedic surgery, involving procedures such as cruciate and patella repairs, dental surgery, ultrasound, oncology, and other challenging medical cases. Dr. Soverns and I have three children, two of which are also veterinarians at Countryside, Dr. Julie Thumel and Dr. Heath Thumel. Our youngest daughter, Paige, earned
her Master’s in Education and teaches in Severna Park. I enjoy mountain biking with my family and boating on the Severn River or Chesapeake Bay.

What Clients Love:

"Countryside is the best! I have been taking my dogs there for 30 plus years. I 100% trust Dr. Thumel’s knowledge and expertise. He saved one of my Golden’s life twice! I am so thankful to have them!" - Kathy A

"The care that our dogs have received at Countryside during the past 22 years has been outstanding. They have kept them healthy, strong and happy through the years. All of the staff have been friendly to us and especially to our dogs. They certainly understand how pets are such a big part of families. Unfortunately we had to make the decision to let our beloved Jack Russell Terrier, Bodie, go. It was not easy for us, and we are coming to know that it was best for Bodie. Dr. Thumel and Caroline were so kind, caring and compassionate during our ordeal. They were gentle with Bodie as we said our good byes and held him for the last time. They both knew and understood our emotions as did the staff at the front desk. Thank you for caring and being so kind." - Patricia P.
